Zambia's Mahogany Air resumes operations

Mahogany Air (Lusaka) has resumed commercial operations following a three-year long hiatus. The carrier said in a statement on Monday, June 26, its maiden service operated between Lusaka and Ndola. Additional services are expected to Solwezi, Mfuwe, and Livingstone.

Operations are onboard EMB-120 capacity wet-leased from South African ACMI/charter specialist Sahara African Aviation (Nelspruit).

Earlier this year, airline Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jim Belemu said a consortium of Zambian and Dubai-based investors had pledged to recapitalize Mahogany Air to the tune of USD23 million spread over the next three years.

Comac C919 The government of the northwest Nigerian state of Kaduna has opened talks with Chinese aircraft manufacturer COMAC (Shanghai Pudong) over the proposed supply of aircraft to Nigerian carriers willing to use Kaduna International Airport as a base. A statement issued to the country's press last week said the unspecified aircraft, once leased, would allow operators, such as Med-View Airline (VL, Kano), to boost their throughput at the Kaduna International Airport. No specific aircraft types were mentioned in the communique but the C919 is seen as the most likely contender for any contract. Given its relatively close proximity to Abuja Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (188 kilometers), Kaduna has been relegated to a small regional facility. Air Namibia to resume West African flights from late 1Q18

Air Namibia A319-100 Air Namibia (SW, Windhoek Int'l) has confirmed it will resume scheduled passenger flights to West Africa early next year. In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 22, the carrier said its Windhoek Int'l-Lagos (Nigeria)-Accra (Ghana) return service would operate 4x weekly effective March 25, 2018. It has been granted 5th Freedom traffic rights for the Ghana-Nigeria vv. sectors of the flight which will operate onboard A319-100 equipment. Air Namibia operated the route from 2009 until 2013 when poor load factors forced it to withdraw. At present, the state-owned carrier runs scheduled passenger flights throughout Namibia as well as to South Africa, Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana regionally. South Africa's CemAir inks LOI for two Q400s

Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 CemAir (5Z, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Bombardier (BBA, Montréal Trudeau) for two Dash 8-400/Q400s. Once firmed, the two turboprops would be the South African operator's first of the type. CemAir currently operates a fleet of fourteen CRJ-100s, three CRJ-200s, one Dash 8-100, two Dash 8-300s, and nine Beech 1900Ds. Aside from ACMI/charter work, it also offers scheduled passenger flights throughout South Africa serving Johannesburg O.R. Tambo, Bloemfontein, Hoedspruit, Margate, Plettenberg Bay, Sishen, George, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth.
